Wellgate For Women On A Quest To Save Relationships — One Wrist At A Time
Recent Survey Shows Women are in Love with their Computers, but "Cubicle Romances" may be Straining both Personal Relationships and Physical Health
Move over Brad Pitt. Out of the way, McConaughey. American women are in love... with their computers.
According to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Wellgate for Women, the overwhelming majority (96%) of U.S. adult women who work in an office setting claim to like or love their computer. Wellgate for Women is the creator of a line of stylish and functional orthopedic supports made specifically to address both the needs of a womanís biomechanics and her sense of style, including a Slimfit Wrist Support® that helps relieve the symptoms associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome — a common problem among women who spend too much time loving their computers. On average, female office workers typically spend nearly triple the amount of time with their computer than with their significant other each day (9.3 hours compared to 3.6 hours, respectively). In fact, about one in ten (9%) have actually had the same computer longer than she has been with her current significant other!
Between ordering groceries online and video-conferencing with friends, planning romantic getaways and checking the latest celebrity gossip, even after a long workday, the infinite opportunities that the computer offers makes it hard for most people to step away. This close relationship people have with their computer might be a time-saver, but as the survey indicates, it does take a toll on both personal relationships as well as physical health.
ìWhen repetitive finger motions like typing or clicking a mouse are performed with a bent wrist it can cause stress to the tendons,î says Megan Barclay M.S., P.T. ìWhen your wrist is in line with your forearm, which the Wellgate for Women Slimfit Wrist Support® allows while working at a computer, it can help alleviate wrist pain associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome,î adds Barclay.
Women who work in an office setting are twice as likely to suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which occurs when the median nerve becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist, than their male counterparts (9% of women vs. 4% of men). About one in five female office workers (19%) said they experience wrist pain while typing or using a mouse and a similar proportion (18%) experience wrist pain after typing or using a mouse. Still, four out of five of these women (80%) admit they do not use a form of wrist support while doing these activities.
Thatís why Wellgate for Women has decided to help engage wrists and computers everywhere in a bit of coupleís therapy. MyCubicleRomance.com is a new Web site created by Wellgate for Women dedicated to providing important wrist health information, including tips for proper body positioning while working at the computer and helpful ways to stretch and strengthen wrists throughout the day to avoid injury.
Approximately three out of four female office workers (77%) said they would be at least somewhat likely to use a product that helps prevent wrist pain caused by using a computer, and Wellgate for Women offers women a product designed just fo them.
The Slimfit Wrist Support® has been developed with super-soft, lightweight, and breathable fabrics; two firm stabilizers for support; and soothing memory foam for daytime and nighttime relief. There is no longer a need to be embarrassed by having to wear a big, bulky, not-so-attractive wrist support. The Slimfit Wrist Support® has a chic design that offers easy, one-handed application and provides wrist support while writing and typing or mousing on the computer. Itís fun, flexible and understanding of how you need to spend your day — now, if only relationships could be that easy!
A Real Cubicle Romance
Female adults who work in an office setting invest so much time into their relationship with their computer that more than three in five (62%) actually spend more time with their computer than they do shopping! And, it doesnít end there. Many female office workers also claim to spend more time with their computer than they spend exercising (79%), being outdoors (62%), with friends (58%), taking care of personal hygiene (43%), relaxing (44%) and with family (41%).
Some American women have even turned to their PCs to find love. About one in ten female office workers (12%) came clean, saying the Internet has had an overall positive impact on their romantic life, however, male office workers (21%) were nearly twice as likely to claim this as women.
Not all women are happy flirting with their PCís all day, every day. After countless hours sitting face-to-screen with their faithful, albeit silent, computer partner, many female office workers are left longing for more human interaction, with one in five (20%) wishing she could spend more time with her significant other rather than with her computer. And, significant others agree. Approximately one in ten female office workers (9%) claim their significant other thinks she spends too much time with her computer.
